Jack stood and climbed over Toby’s legs, stopping to give him a kiss as he did. “Be right back.”

He walked to the door that led to Ryker’s private bedroom and knocked. “Can I come in?”

“Just a second,” Ryker answered.

Several moments later, Ryker opened the door. “Sorry. I was just going over this file.”

Jack glanced at the spread of papers on the bed. He didn’t miss the red rim around Ryker’s blue eyes. In all the years he’d known the stoic billionaire, never once had his friend shown this much emotion.

Without thought, Jack pulled Ryker into his arms. “What’s wrong?” he whispered.

“How could they have kept this from me?”

Ryker pulled back and looked Jack in the eyes. “When I told you I slept with you to make sure you were Alpha material, I wasn’t telling you the whole truth.”

“Well, duh,” Jack chuckled. “Like I said before, if that’s all you were after, one dip of your wick would’ve been enough.”

Jack’s attempt to lighten the mood didn’t quite hit its mark. Ryker fell back onto the bed and buried his face in his hands.

“I’ve lived alone for so long. And in that time my Mother didn’t bother to tell me I wasn’t the only Guardian.” Ryker pulled a handkerchief out of his suit pocket and blew his nose. “Makes me wonder what else she isn’t telling me, ya know?” Ryker shook his head. “That journal of yours? I’m supposed to give it to Hakan.”

“Why him?” Jack asked. “I thought this guy was the silver expert. You saying he’ll be able to decipher the pictographs?”

It had taken a leap of faith to give Ryker the journal, and now his friend was going to turn around and share it with something else? Someone Jack didn’t even know?

Ryker nodded. “Hakan’s much older than I am. According to Mother, he knows the Native American history of this country better than anyone. Hell, he should, Hakan was a medicine man.”

Surprised, Jack took a seat beside his friend. “How’s that possible? I mean, I thought…” Jack snapped his mouth shut, rethinking what he was about to say. “I didn’t know Guardian’s were real men. God. That came out wrong, sorry.”

Ryker gave him a half-smile. “I knew what you meant, but I can’t tell you who I was, or how I died. All that’s important is that Mother gave me a new life and an important job to do.”

Jack reached out and took Ryker’s hand in his. “Then that’s what you need to focus on.”

Ryker let out a bitter chuckle. “Easy for you to say. You don’t go to bed alone anymore.”

What could he possibly say to that? Yes, he was thankful he’d found his purpose and the man he was destined to be with until he died, but sometimes he wasn’t so sure. “Can I tell you something?” Jack asked.

Ryker nodded.

“There are times when I feel like my power of choice has been stripped from me. Am I some pawn in a chess game between gods? Did I
